Dear Madam President,
As the secretary of the department of education, I would like to send you some information on current issues. First thing I would like to address is the drop out rate. In 2019 the drop out rate between 16-24 year old’s was 5.1%. 27% of these dropouts say it is because they are failing to many classes. We should implement a better grading system that caters to each individual’s need. We could hire more tutors and make S.T.E.M programs more advanced and available. Another issue I would like to address is teacher salary. Teachers on average get paid between $25-50,000 a year. We should put more money into schools for teachers. To do this, we have to get money from somewhere else, and I propose we get this money from some of what we spend on government subsidized fossil fuels. Thirdly, I must inform you on the academic disadvantages faced by students of lower socioeconomic status as well as the downsides of standardized testing. These tests have shown to have a bias toward students in upper class households whilst not measuring the skills of students well and causing mental health issues. Many studies have shown that richer students get higher SAT scores than lower income peers due to the amount of resources available to them. I believe American students should have an even playing field, which is why I urge you to advocate for eliminating standardized testing from school curriculums, as well as subsidies from our government budget toward fossil fuels, and instead put those funds toward teachers and students for the betterment of our education system.
